For all of us establishing a consistent sleep schedule is vital for both kids and adults. Quality sleep supports growth, development, and overall health. We would always suggest 1st to understand sleep, and then working over it as it can really help to understand the appropriate need for kids and adults

    Understanding Sleep Needs

Firstly, Let us understand some of the numbers which an individual as per their age would required to fulfil:

    • Infants (0-1 year): 14-17 hours
    • Toddlers (1-3 years): 12-14 hours
    • Preschoolers (3-5 years): 10-13 hours
    • School-age children (6-13 years): 9-11 hours
    • Teenagers (14-17 years): 8-10 hours
    • Adults: 7-9 hours

    Setting a Fixed Bedtime

For kids as well as adults, we would suggest to keep a fixed bedtime no matter if that is a weekend or a weekday as that allows everyone to get the necessary hours of sleep. Consistency is key. Aim to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends. This helps regulate the body’s internal clock.

    Making yourself Ready to Sleep

A winding down routine can signal the body that it’s time to sleep. For Kids, this might include:

    • Reading a story
    • Taking a warm bath
    • Listening to calming music

But for Adults can benefit from similar activities, like:

    • Dimming the lights
    • Practicing relaxation techniques (like deep breathing or meditation)
    • Avoiding screens for at least 30 minutes before bed

Limiting the Stimulants and Heavy Meals

Even though, if you are following a schedule, there are high chances that the type of food that you eat and give it to kids is highly responsible for understanding the sleep, making the consistent and troubling in the same. Caffeine and heavy meals close to bedtime can disrupt sleep. Encourage kids to avoid sugary snacks in the evening and adults to limit caffeine intake after mid afternoon.

    Remain Flexible but Firm

Flexibility is very important for us as it can help us to better understand the things around us as each day is not the same and our emotions keeps changing, but keeping it with discipline and firm can really help. Life can be unpredictable, and sometimes schedules need adjusting. However, maintaining the core routine is crucial. If bedtime needs to shift occasionally, try to return to the regular schedule the following day.

    Keeping an Eye

Keep an eye on how well the sleep schedule works. If someone struggles to fall asleep or stay asleep, reassess the routine and make necessary adjustments. There are various gadgets that you can use to record the sleep as well as there are a lot many Sleep apps or journals can help track patterns and identify issues.

We at Mentoring Minds Counsellors understand that creating a sleep schedule is an investment in the health and well-being of your family.
