RUMINATION – The Repetitive Thinking

We’ve all been there stuck in an endless loop of replaying the same negative thought over and over again. Maybe it’s a mistake from the past, a tough conversation, or an anxious “what if” about the future. This cycle is called rumination, and while it feels like you’re working through something, in reality, it often leaves you drained, restless, and even more stuck.

Why We Ruminate?

Our brains are problem-solving machines. When something feels unresolved, the mind wants to “fix” it by going over it repeatedly. But instead of finding clarity, we often end up reinforcing worry, self-doubt, or guilt. Rumination traps us in yesterday’s pain or tomorrow’s fears instead of living in today’s reality.

Steps to Stop Repeating Negative Thoughts

1. Noticing the Loop

The first step is awareness. Catch yourself when your thoughts are circling back to the same topic.

  • Reflection helps to learn and move forward.
  • Rumination keeps you stuck.

2. Shifting Focus

  • Do a quick breathing exercise.
  • Write the thought down and tell yourself, “I’ll come back to this later if needed.”

3. Challenging the Thought

  • Is this thought helping me, or is it just making me feel worse?
  • What evidence do I actually have?
  • What would I say to a friend stuck in this thought?

4. Creating a “Worry Time”

If your brain insists on revisiting negative thoughts, set aside a specific time say, 10 minutes in the evening to acknowledge them. Knowing you have a “time slot” helps you let go in the moment. More often than not, when that time comes, the thought has already lost its intensity.

5. Grounding To Present

Noticing five things you can see, four you can touch, three you can hear, two you can smell, and one you can taste.

The Bigger Picture

We at Mentoring Minds Counsellors understand that Breaking free from rumination isn’t about never having negative thoughts it’s about not letting them control you. Thoughts will come and go, but you get to choose whether to stay trapped in the loop or step out of it.

When you practice awareness, self-compassion, and redirection, you gradually train your mind to stop feeding the cycle. Over time, you’ll notice more space, more calm, and more energy to focus on the things that actually matter.

You don’t need to sometimes solve everything in your head. Sometimes, peace comes from stepping out of your thoughts and stepping into your life.
